Facility Maintenance Case Study: NWAS UPS Upgrade
Introduction
The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust operates a highly demanding environment where uninterrupted communication is essential for patient response and emergency coordination. Its Liverpool facilities rely on resilient data centre infrastructure to support call centre systems, digital platforms and critical operational communications.
Effective data centre facility maintenance is central to ensuring that critical digital services remain continuously available to office staff and internal operations. As part of this maintenance strategy, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems hold particular importance.
These systems provide a stable and reliable buffer between sensitive equipment and the mains supply, shielding infrastructure from voltage fluctuations, short term outages and other forms of electrical instability.
UPS Battery Replacement for Data Centre Resilience
As part of our ongoing data centre facility maintenance partnership with the Trust, Infiniti IT, working in collaboration with Riello UK, recently completed a full battery replacement for two 100kVA UPS systems. Each UPS is supported by a dedicated battery cabinet and the project required the replacement of approximately eighty battery blocks within respective battery cabinets. Given that sealed lead acid batteries typically reach the end of their manufacturer recommended service life around year six or seven, planned replacement is essential to maintain power resilience. The newly installed battery sets will now support several further years of stable and dependable operation for the NHS.
Infiniti IT has maintained this site since designing and building the data centre that houses these systems, enabling us to deliver structured, proactive and reliable support. Our knowledge of the infrastructure ensures that every maintenance activity, including major works such as UPS refurbishment, is delivered with precision and minimal risk.
Ahead of the replacement programme, our engineering team verified with site that all rack mounted equipment was supported by dual power feeds for further redundancy. As the site operates an N plus N configuration, this verification ensured that each UPS could be isolated in turn while maintaining full redundancy across all critical loads. This preparation allowed the replacement process to proceed safely without any interruption to call centre or technical operations.

In addition to the technical works, Infiniti IT managed all aspects of site coordination. This included arranging controlled access, establishing a safe work area within the live data centre environment and organising the compliant removal and disposal of the expired battery sets. These elements were handled as part of our turnkey approach, ensuring that the Trust received a complete, professionally managed service from planning through to final commissioning.
The full programme was completed within a single day without issue and the new battery systems were commissioned immediately with no impact on operational continuity. This project highlights the value of well structured data centre facility maintenance in protecting essential services and maintaining technical resilience.
Infiniti IT provides a comprehensive range of data centre facility maintenance services, including UPS maintenance, battery replacement programmes, resilience testing, environmental management and full lifecycle infrastructure support. Our proactive approach helps organisations protect their critical environments, minimise downtime risk and ensure consistent performance across all data centre systems.
Factilitiy Maintenance Services
Data centre maintenance should be a central element of any organisation’s facilities strategy. Industry evidence shows that inadequate maintenance is one of the leading causes of unplanned downtime. Although effective capacity management and strong infrastructure design reduce operational risk, they cannot replace the value of professional maintenance carried out by experienced specialists.Click below to get in touch today and explore how our data centre facility maintenance services can support your organisation.
