Facility Maintenance Case Study: EMS Upgrade
Introduction
One of our long term customers required the upgrade of an existing environmental monitoring system (EMS) within their critical data centre facility. As the legacy Geist Watchdog platform had reached end of life, replacement of the system was necessary to maintain operational resilience, improve reliability and visibility across mission critical systems.
The objective of the project was to replace the existing system with a modern environmental monitoring solution while maintaining full protection of critical infrastructure throughout the transition.
Environmental monitoring systems are vital within data centres as they provide continuous visibility of temperature, humidity, power and other critical conditions that directly affect the reliability of IT infrastructure. Early detection of abnormal conditions enables proactive intervention, reducing the risk of equipment failure and unplanned downtime.
Data Centre Environmental Monitoring System Upgrade Project
Environmental monitoring systems (EMS) are fundamental to the safe operation of data centres, particularly where service availability and data integrity are critical. The primary challenge of this project was delivering the upgrade within a live operational environment, without disrupting monitoring, alerting or control of essential systems.
The existing platform was integrated with multiple mission critical services, including cooling, power and fire protection systems. Any interruption or misconfiguration during the migration could have resulted in increased operational risk.
Scope of Works
This project involved the controlled decommissioning of the existing Geist Watchdog system and the migration to a new, modern monitoring platform. Key elements of the scope included:
- Migration and re-termination of relay cabling supporting air conditioning and environmental control units
- Integration of Uninterruptible Power Supply systems
- Migration of fire detection and fire suppression system monitoring
- Re-connection and validation of temperature and humidity sensors located in both cold aisle and hot aisle environments
All sensors and relays were tested to confirm accurate data reporting, alarm thresholds and escalation paths under the new system.

Our Approach and the Importance of Environmental Monitoring Systems
A structured change management methodology was applied to minimise risk and maintain continuous environmental visibility. Works were delivered in planned stages, with careful coordination between engineering teams and stakeholders. Continuous monitoring coverage was maintained throughout the migration, ensuring that critical systems remained protected at all times. Comprehensive testing and verification were undertaken following each phase of the works.
The Importance of Environmental Monitoring Systems In Data Centres
Modern environmental monitoring is essential for maintaining resilience and operational efficiency within data centres. For our customer, the upgraded system provides enhanced capability to:
- Prevent overheating and humidity related equipment failures
- Identify cooling inefficiencies at an early stage
- Protect power infrastructure from thermal stress
- Detect abnormal conditions such as fire or environmental deviation
- Support compliance, auditing and assurance activities
The new platform delivers improved reliability, clearer alerting and greater scalability to support future requirements.
Supporting Client Assurance and Site Visits
The upgraded system also improves transparency for visiting clients and stakeholders. During site visits, live environmental data can be presented to demonstrate how conditions are monitored and managed across the facility. This includes clear visibility of cold aisle and hot aisle conditions, alarm response procedures and overall environmental control strategies, reinforcing confidence in the facility’s operational standards.
Project Outcome
The project was successfully delivered without disruption to live services. Our valued customer now benefits from a modern, resilient environmental monitoring solution that enhances protection of critical infrastructure and supports long term operational resilience. The upgrade has improved visibility, reduced operational risk and positioned the facility to meet future demands with confidence.
Our environmental monitoring solutions provide clear, real time visibility of critical conditions, supporting operational resilience, compliance and stakeholder assurance. Combined with our professional servicing and ongoing support, we ensure monitoring systems remain reliable, accurate and fit for purpose throughout their lifecycle. Click here to find out more.
Factilitiy Maintenance Services
Data centre maintenance should form a core component of any organisation’s facilities strategy. Industry evidence consistently shows that inadequate maintenance is a leading cause of unplanned downtime. While effective capacity management and robust infrastructure design help to reduce operational risk, they cannot substitute the value of professional maintenance delivered by experienced specialists.Click below to get in touch today and explore how our data centre facility maintenance services can support your organisation.
